In a Nutshell

Just what is 'Into the Weird?' Well, it's an independent publication and FREE newsletter for fans of sci-fi, comics, cult cinema, and weird fiction launched in June 2024 by me, Herman Louw.

A Little Bit About Me

Before the inception of "Into The Weird," I ventured into the shadows with my horror blog The Longbox of Darkness and my sci-fi blog Fear Planet, both projects that have been labors of love and sources of inspiration for this newsletter. My journey began as a young comic book fan obsessed with movies like Bladerunner, Heavy Metal, The Black Cauldron, and Logan's Run. I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa where, at the age of six, I obsessively began canvassing corner stores for comics, thrift shops for second hand sci-fi novels, and video stores for sci-fi, fantasy, and horror flicks. And today, nothing much has changed. I still obsess over my love affair with pop-culture, even though my home has since shifted from South Africa to Taiwan in Asia.

The Origins of Into the Weird

In 2017 I met a like-minded fan by the name of Grant R. (The host of the Superman podcast: Truth, Justice, and Hope) and we started a podcast called Into the Weird: Marvel Comics in the Bronze Age, the inspiration for which came from the panel below. After Grant bowed out to spend more time with his family, Billy D (from the Magazines & Monsters podcast) took over as co-host.

The panel that started it all. From Marvel's The Defenders #3 (1972)
Our ITW podcast!

Sadly, our show only ran for about sixty episodes over a span of 3 years, but I kept the blog alive (along with our social media accounts) and maintained a sporadic online presence. But now ITW is back, reconfigured as a newsletter!

Our old blog may now be kaput, but its spirit continues on in our Newsletter.

Ultimately, the Into the Weird Newsletter aims to provide news and views from the world of comics, cinema, and speculative fiction. It is ideal for those of you who, like me, appreciate the fantastic in life, and are not afraid to venture Into The Weird occasionally.

So here's the full breakdown of what you can expect:

The Newsletter typically includes the following content:

  1. News from the world of comics, film, and fiction
  2. Recommendations and upcoming new releases
  3. Art spotlight: Jaw-dropping images from around the web
  4. Articles on speculative topics of interest (horror, science fiction, fantasy, etc.)
  5. Exclusive deals, competitions, and giveaways
  6. Reviews of comics, streaming shows, and films
  7. The Book Nook of Doom: A weekly spotlight of beloved books in my collection
  8. New sections, when inspiration strikes

So while it will appear in your inbox thrice weekly (every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) you can always find old articles and new content on this site, intotheweird.org.

You can also join the peculiar community ITW has fostered on Tumblr @intotheweird and on X @intoweird, where I share snippets, images, clips, and thoughts that complement the newsletter's deeper dives into the uncanny.

But that's not all – "Into The Weird" has expanded its horizons into the world of audio with a weekly podcast once again! Every episode, I explore the monstrous and the mysterious, bringing you stories, news, and insights into fictional phenomena. Tune in wherever you find your podcasts, and together we’ll take a fantasy-fueled jaunt... Into the Weird!
